CSA took this decision because the side needs to win the ODI series against the Netherlands in order to qualify directly for the ODI World Cup scheduled later this year in India. South Africa played their last two Test series against England and Australia. They lost the series against England 2-1 while they lost to the Aussies 2-0. On the other hand, West Indies played their last two Test series against Bangladesh and Australia. They won 2-0 against Bangladesh and lost 0-2 to Australia.Â
Ahead of the second ODI, South Africa have major injury concerns. Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj have been ruled out because of a side strain and a torn Achilles. Wayne Parnell who was named as Mulder’s replacement is down with an illness. Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have been rested for the series. David Miller are not a part of the side. Miller will be back for the final ODI. There are no injury concerns with the Windies side who are also fighting qualification chances.

South Africa last played an ODI series against England they won 2-1. West Indies lost their previous ODI series against New Zealand 2-1. Both teams have played 62 ODIs to date with the Proteas winning 44 games while Windies winning just 14. The matches against the Netherlands will be played on March 31 and April 2.
