Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa while Shai Hope will lead West Indies. He was chosen as the ODI skipper of the team after Nicholas Pootan stepped down as the white-ball skipper after the Windies failed to qualify for the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022.

This ODI series is a part of the ICC ODI Super League with World Cup qualification up for grabs for South Africa. They are placed ninth in the rankings with 78 points. West Indies are placed eighth with 88 points. Sri Lanka are placed tenth and has a sniff depending on the result of this series. 

The hosts have injury concerns ahead of the second ODI. They also have a few of their key players missing. Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Aiden Markram have been rested for the series. David Miller is available for the third ODI.

Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi have been added to the squad. Sisanda Magala has split the webbing on his bowling hand. Andile Phehlukwayo is battling lower back spasms. 

Unlike the Proteas, there are no injury concerns with West Indies who are placed eighth on the table and fighting for qualification themselves. Shai Hope also has a job on his hands to lead the side to World Cup qualification. The second ODI will be his first game as the Windies ODI captain.
