Mumbai Indians injury update, team news, key players

There’s no update on Pooja Vastrakar’s availability for the game as the pace-bowling all-rounder injured herself during UP Warriorz game and subsequently missed the game against Gujarat Giants.

Her absence had little impact on MI, who are facing UP Warriorz for the second time this tournament. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side defeated the side comfortably by eight wickets on March 12 at the Brabourne.

Hayley Matthews’ batting form drops

Hayley Matthews, who looked like the woman with the bat at the beginning of the season for MI, is now struggling to score runs fluently. With the pitch turning slower, Matthews hasn’t managed to score big with knocks of 12 and 0 in her last two innings.

The Windies captain is unlikely to lose her spot in playing 11 given her bowling prowess. The spin all-rounder took 10 wickets this season, including a 3/19 spell against Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil earlier. She also took 3/23 in the last game when her teammate and purple cap holder Saika Ishaque went wicketless for the first time this tournament.

Her opening partner Yashtika Bhatia has been a treat to watch at the other end. She has played back-to-back three 40-odd run knocks and a big innings is due from the 22-year-old southpaw.

Nat Sciver Brunt justifies her hefty price tag

English all-rounder Nat Sciver Brunt has made No. 3 batting position her own at Mumbai Indians as her 36-run innings in the last game took her sum of runs to 182 runs. She delivered the goods with the ball as well with a spell of 3/21 later.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, on the other hand, is being the captain she was expected to be as she comes into the game scoring back-to-back half centuries while taking her WPL tally to three.

Amelia Kerr remains consistent with ball

Amelia Kerr got to show her hand with the bat in the last game as she played a cameo of 13-ball 19 while rest of the Mumbai lower-order struggled around her.

Kerr also did her primary job well as she produced an effective and economical spell of 2/18. In fact, barring a game, the New Zealand all-rounder has picked two wickets in all other four games.

Lower-order batter Humaira Kazi finally got an opportunity to bat was unfortunately run out after scoring just 2 while Vastrakar’s replacement Dhara Gujjar only got to face a ball.

Kerr has been doing the job with her leg-spin bowling as well with six wickets in four games, including 2/33 in the last. Pacer Vastrakaer, on the other hand, is used as an optional bowler when the skipper is looking for variation.

Saika Ishaque goes wicketless for the first time

Purple cap holder Saika’s, who has been the find of the tournament as well, wicket-taking run came to a halt after she took 12 wickets in four games. The 27-year-old left-arm spinner, who took seven of her wickets at the DY Patil, was shown respect by Gujarat batters as she gave away just 20 runs during her spell.

Among pacers, Issy Wong delivered another economical spell of 1/19 (3 overs) and has taken her season’s wicket tally to five in as many games.

UP Warriorz injury update, team news

UP Warriorz injury update, team news

There’s no fresh injury reported from UP Warriroz camp and will be hoping their captain Alyssa Healy fires another big innings with the team in dire need of a win, that too against a formidable side like Mumbai Indians.

The Australian had a bad day in the last game too as they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore while she could only contribute 1 run. The innings appear to be an anomaly as it came after she shot back-to-back half centuries.

Her new opening partner Devika Vaidya flopped in consecutive innings after scoring 36* in an unbeaten stand with Healy, who scored 96* in that game. Her leg spin didn’t get much of the captain’s trust either but she did pick a wicket in the last game after being given two overs to bowl.

Explosive batter Kiran Navgire looked uncomfortable during her 26-ball 22 as the slow nature of the DY Patil didn’t allow the batter to play her natural game.

Grace Harris makes her chance count

Hard-hitting Grace Harris, who continues go in and out of the team with Warriorz struggling to accommodate their overseas players, made her chance count with a 32-ball 46. Her innings took Warriorz to a respectable total in the loss as the remainder of batting order crumbled around her.

This included Tahlia McGrath, who disappointed like her captain by scoring just two despite scoring two half-centuries recently, summing up the inconsistent show of UP Warriorz this season.

Among other prominent batting failures were U-19 champion Shweta Sehrawat, who could only score 6 after being demoted down to an unfamiliar No.8 as she flopped earlier as an opener as well.

Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone remain hopes of Warrirorz bowling

All-rounder Deepti Sharma got some runs under her bat in that collapse with an innings of 19-ball 22. Sharma bowled a spell of 2/26 in the last game but the target of 136 proved too short to defend.

Sophie Ecclestone was influential with her bowling too as she bowled a tidy 1/20 while the duo together has picked 16 wickets now.

The side has also decided to shift its focus on their spinners in the team with the pitch assisting as Anjali Sarvani remains the sole pacer in the playing 11 and her average spells meant she was handed just an over in the game.

Warriorz’ third spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, however, is needed to up her game as the left-arm orthodox took just three wickets despite retaining her spot in all the games.

DY Patil Stadium appeared much slower than before in the last match with spinners finding it more comfortable to bowl in. There was early movement on the offer for seamers as well. Anything above 170 could be a task to chase while the square region of the boundary is shorter and is often targetted by the batters.

G Harris could be an option as well given she is going to bowl spin and has been in good form with the bat.
