The much-anticipated cricket extravaganza, like it’s previous editions, will see many Indian and overseas stars alongside some relative unknowns take to field for the 74-match event.
Every season, an individual takes the tournament by storm either with bat or ball, mostly with the bat as there is a saying “it’s batters game” thanks to many favouring conditions like the pitch, ground dimensions, restrictions to fielders and bowlers.
Over the 15 editions, we have seen at least 13 different players end the season as the highest run-getter (Orange Cap winner), while two players have topped the leaderboard for runs more than once.
Among the 13 highest-run scorers in previous seasons, five are Indian players, while eight are overseas players, showcasing the dominance of the foreign players when it comes to scoring runs.
David Warner and Chris Gayle have ended IPL seasons as the leading run-scorer two times or more. Shaun Marsh, Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Kane Williamson and most recently Jos Buttler have all finished top of the leaderboard.
Sachin Tendulkar, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad and KL Rahul are the five Indian players that finished a season of the Indian Premier League as the highest run-scorers.
This season too there will be some star names from across the globe competing in IPL, including former Orange Cap winners Kohli, Rahul, Gaikwad, Buttler, Warner and Williamson. So, let’s take a look at the overseas players likely to score most runs in IPL 2023.
Devon Conway (Chennai Super Kings)
The New Zealand batter showed signs of his ability with the bat last season and will be keen to have a better campaign this time around as he will look to cement his place in the CSK line-up, opening the batting alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad. In 7 innings, he scored 252 runs including three fifties in IPL 2022. With a consistent run, Conway will be amongst top run-getters in IPL 2023.
David Miller (Gujarat Titans)
The South African batter has played some important innings over the years for his national side as well as his IPL franchises. Miller was crucial to Gujarat Titans’ title win in 2022, when he scored 481 runs, including 2 fifties in 16 innings. He most often batted at number 5 or 6, but if he gets the time in the middle more often, he is only likely to pile on the runs. The southpaw will once again be among the top run-scorers this season.
David Warner (Delhi Capitals)
The three-time Orange Cap winner can never be left out of the conversation when it is about potential highest run-scorers in any tournament let alone IPL. In 12 innings, Warner scored 432 runs, including 5 fifties last season. With a full tournament, Warner has shown what he is capable of in previous IPL seasons. So, Australian opener may once again be in the running for the Orange Cap especially as the opener of his team.
Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Hyderabad)
The South African has been named skipper of the T20I side of his national team as well as his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad following his display in the SA20. Although he scored only 381 in the 12 innings last season, like several other players, Markram too will be a different player when he has a full tournament.
Quinton de Kock (Lucknow Super Giants)
The South Africa wicketkeeper-batter has been in the top 15 run-getters of most seasons of IPL that he has participated. De Kock had scored 508 runs, including three fifties and one hundred, in 15 innings. As an opener, he will once again get a chance to chase for the Orange Cap along with his opening partner KL Rahul.
Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)
Last season’s Orange Cap winner had a dream run in 2022, when he capped off the year with the T20 World Cup title. His only regret may be not going all the way to win Rajasthan Royals’ second IPL trophy. In IPL 2022, Buttler smashed four hundreds and four fifties to end the season with 863 runs in 17 innings. With signs of form ahead of the new campaign, Buttler will be once again challenging for the highest run-scorers spot.
Faf Du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
The former South Africa captain has been a consistent run-getter ever since he made his IPL debut. He missed out on the Orange Cap to then teammate Gaikwad by just three runs in 2021. In 2022, Du Plessis was roped in by RCB and carried his form by scoring 468 runs including three fifties in 16 innings. As an opener of the side, he is once again expected to be among the highest run-getters for the season.
