India take on Australia in the second ODI in Vizag on March 19. The Men in Blue won the first ODI by five wickets. The Aussies are heading into this game in a must-win situation. Meanwhile, India after winning the Test series will now target to complete an ODI series win by winning the second game.
Rohit Sharma will come back into the XI and also take over leadership responsibilities from Hardik Pandy. He is likely to be the only change in the Indian playing XI heading into the second ODI.

The first ODI opened up opportunities to a few players. While KL Rahul grabbed the opportunity with both hands, Ishan Kishan let his opportunity slip. The likes of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav should be a part of the playing XI as there is no change required to break a winning combination.
The ODI series allows the selected players in the squad to perform and make a case for their selection in the ODI World Cup squad. However, there are also reports that the players in the squad will be rotated across three games.

Shreyas Iyer is ruled out of the series after aggravating his lower-back injury. He did not bat in the fourth Test after fielding for two days and recouping the injury in the process. The BCCI decided not to name a replacement for the middle-order batter. Meanwhile, in this article, we take a look at India’s probable playing XI for the second ODI against Australia.
India vs Australia: IND’s Playing XI For AUS, 2nd ODI, 2023
Shubman Gill
Gill will open the batting for India. He has already scored 587 runs in just seven ODIs this year at an average of 113.40 and a strike rate touching 130 with three hundreds. He scored 20 in the first ODI and will look to maximise his opportunities in the second ODI.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit will make a comeback into the playing XI and open the batting with Gill. He will also lead the side. He scored a century in the first test against Australia and has already scored an ODI century this year against the Kiwis. The Indian skipper has 8 ODI tons against the Aussies and would like to score another one.
Virat Kohli
The former Indian skipper will slot in at three. He is just 187 runs away from getting to 13000 ODI runs. Kohli scored just four in the first ODI. His match-up against Adam Zampa will be an interesting contest as the spinner has already dismissed him five times in ODIs.
Suryakumar Yadav
SKY will slot in at four. His ODI career has not yet got the start that his T20I career has. The right-hander has played 21 ODIs and scored just 433 runs at an average of 28.87 with just two fifties. He has to make this series count after getting out for a duck in the first ODI.
KL Rahul (WK)
KL Rahul will slot in at five. He scored an unbeaten 75 in the first ODI and in the process silenced his critics. He has already scored two fifties in four ODIs this year and averaging 92.50 at the moment. Rahul struggled badly in the Test series leading up to the first ODI.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya, the skipper will slot in at five. He scored a crucial 25 in the first ODI and picked up one wicket as well. Pandya and Jadeja provide the Indian XI with enough variety in the bowling attack and depth in their batting order as well.
Ravindra Jadeja
Jadeja is making a comeback into ODI cricket. He played his last ODI in July 2022 against England. His return certainly strengthens the lower-middle order and his fielding is always a bonus. He scored an unbeaten 45 in the first ODI and took two wickets as well.
Shardul Thakur
Shardul Thakur will slot in at number eight in the lineup. He was chosen ahead of Washington Sundar in the first ODI. He bowled just two overs and did not get his opportunity with the bat. He will be expected to play a bigger role in the second ODI.
Mohammed Shami
Shami will lead the pace attack for India. He picked up three wickets in the first ODI giving away just 17 runs in six overs. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, he is the leader of the attack. He has picked up 10 wickets from six games so far this year.
Mohammed Siraj
Siraj will partner with Shami from the other end. He has also been bowling well in ODIs. So far he picked up 38 wickets in 21 ODIs. This year he has taken 17 wickets in six ODIs so far. The pacer picked up three wickets in the first ODI.
Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav concludes India’s likely XI for the second ODI. He picked up 1 wicket but was expensive in the first ODI. He has already picked up 12 wickets in six ODIs this year. Between 2019 to 2021, Kuldeep did not get to play too many matches but has made a good comeback.
