“I Like The Thought Of KL Rahul Wicket-keeping In The WTC Final” – Wasim Jaffer

Former India National Cricket Team batsman Wasim Jaffer has stated that he likes the idea of KL Rahul keeping the wickets in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 final against the Australia National Cricket Team.

The final of the ongoing cycle of the ICC World Test Championship will be played between Australia and India at The Oval in London from June 7 to 11.

In the WTC final, India will be without the star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been the standout performer for the side in the purest format of the game, as the 25-year-old has been ruled out for an indefinite period of time after his horrific road accident last December.

In the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, KS Bharat was handed the wicket-keeping responsibility and he disappointed many with his performance, which even led to calls for the inclusion of Ishan Kishan in the playing XI as a wicket-keeper.

KS Bharat missed several chances behind the stumps and overall scored 101 runs in 4 games at an average of 20.2, with the best score of 44. With Bharat failing to do well and Pant being out with an injury, many cricket fans and pundits have put forward the name of KL Rahul for the wicket-keeping role in the WTC final. Recently, Ravi Shastri also backed KL Rahul to make his Test comeback and bat in the middle order while keeping wickets in the WTC final.

If KL Rahul is ready to don the gloves and he can play at No.5, then it will be a great – Wasim Jaffer

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo after the IND vs AUS 1st ODI, where KL Rahul kept wickets and performed exceptionally well, Wasim Jaffer said that Rahul batting at No.5 and keeping wickets is a great option for India as he can add stability to the middle-order.

“I like the thought of KL Rahul wicketkeeping in the World Test Championship final. Wicketkeeping in Tests is a lot different than in ODIs and he has had back issues in the past. But if Rahul is ready to don the gloves and he can play at No.5, then it will be a great option for India,” Wasim Jaffer said.

Notably, KL Rahul was sacked as vice-captain in Test cricket and was dropped from the playing XI after the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 after a string of poor performances. Shubman Gill replaced KL Rahul and joined Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.
