Cricket West Indies (CWI) is planning to establish a split coaching policy, in which separate coaches will be hired for the Test and limited-overs sides. This choice was made in an effort to adapt to the changing needs of today’s game.
The job of West Indies men’s head coach became vacant after Phil Simmons quit following the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup and later abandoned the role following the end of the West Indies tour of Australia in December.

Cricket West Indies has made the decision to appoint different coaches for their respective Test and limited-overs squads in an effort to adapt to the evolving requirements of the modern game. The three-member World Cup review group’s report was the basis for the decision, which was announced by CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams.
“After recently completing an independent review of our 2022 ICC World Cup performance, which included a closer look at the roles of the current Head Coach position, we believe it is now necessary to split the role and engage separate coaches for red and white ball formats,” said Adams.

“The increased frequency of back-to-back multi-format tours combined with the specific demands of the respective formats no longer provides enough time for one individual to adequately plan, prepare and review across bilateral series and franchise itineraries that are so condensed,” Jimmy Adams Added.
“Separating the roles will also provide the Head Coaches with more time”- Cricket West Indies
The World Cup Review Group was led by Justice Patrick Thomson Jr., a High Court judge from the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court. Brian Lara, a legendary hitter, and Mickey Arthur, a seasoned international coach, were also there. West Indies will reportedly have two coaches, one for the Test team and A team and the other just for the white-ball teams.
Adams added: “Separating the roles will also provide the Head Coaches with more time to oversee players’ ongoing development away from tours directly, and through increased engagement and planning with suitable high-performance programs and coaches”
Phil Simmons, the previous West Indies Head Coach, stepped down following the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. Andre Coley has served as a temporary coach for the Zimbabwe Tests and the continuing multi-format tour of South Africa since his resignation.
